The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of Industrial Placements, which will commence from July 2025 until July 2026.
We’re looking for two exceptional Industrial Placement Software Developer to help us make a difference to our planet.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placements all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.

The Met Office is one of two World Area Forecast Centres, which are responsible for issuing weather information to every flight that takes off across the globe.
On your Industrial Placement in Transport, you will have space to learn and work in an Agile team. You will work together to understand, design and deliver visualisation tools and data applications to meet the needs of our customers.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build and maintain services that support safety critical decision making on a global scale.

Your key duties
As an Industrial Placement Software Developer, you will:
- Work in an Agile development team to deliver user value
- Build your knowledge of software development practices
- Learn and develop skills in different types of testing
- Develop an awareness of information security and system design

This opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we'll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.
Additionally, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.
Essential Criteria:
- Modern Standards and approaches: You can demonstrate your learning to date and how you keep abreast of developments in technology or the environment. You are aware of modern approaches, such as Agile, Test Driven Development, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (We Keep Evolving).
- Programming and build (software engineering): You can demonstrate your experience of designing, coding and testing simple software programs or scripts. We typically deploy Python or Java applications onto cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) (We’re expert by nature).
- We’re Better Together: Communication is an important part of your role; you can demonstrate evidence of teamwork and how your contributions have made a difference to the outcome.
