We’re looking for an exceptional Senior Civil Contingencies Advisor to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Senior Civil Contingencies Advisor, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works partly from an appropriate Met Office location and partly from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 2.5 days per week/18.5 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. This post may be based at various UK Met Office sites depending on availability and suitability for the role. Your world of expertise

The Met Office Civil Contingencies Advisors work closely with the Civil Contingencies community, providing essential support in weather related incidents and in the development of contingency plans. 

As a Senior Advisor you will provide cohesion and leadership to this front line function. You'll work across the Office at a high level to ensure a co-ordinated response in the provision of advice on weather related incidents for senior officials and ministers in UK and Devolved Governments. As a manager, you will also strengthen existing relationships and build knowledge across the Met Office 

 

Your key duties

  • Guide, manage and develop the team of Civil Contingencies Advisors to ensure sufficient team capacity and capability to deliver to agreed service levels and customer expectations. 
  • Coordinate and deliver expert Met Office advice to Government Departments (both Westminster and Devolved equivalents) 
  • Act as liaison between appropriate Met Office teams to ensure that situational awareness, consistency and best practice is shared and adhered to during significant weather events, and improved over time. 
  • As a Subject Matter Expert in customer requirements, work across the Met Office to improve services and capabilities to the resilience community.

As our Senior Civil Contingencies Advisor, your total reward package will be up to £72,530 annually, which includes:

  • £52,799 base pay, 
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%.
  • Unsocial Hours On-Call Allowance when applicable.
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

 

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

  1. Ability to effectively lead, manage and develop a team, working better together to maintain performance, resilience and wellbeing. 
  2. Influencing stakeholders using excellent communication, engagement and relationship building skills to develop productive internal and external working relationships.
  3. A good understanding of devolved and national politics and government policy across a wide range of Government Departments and associated relevant legislation governing civil contingencies.
  4. A good understanding of the Met Office strategic aims and forecasting process, with experience in the evaluation and communication of weather conditions.
  5. Highly organised with drive and resilience to deliver to tight deadlines under pressure, whilst demonstrating optimum decision-making and resource prioritisation in the face of multiple and conflicting demands on scarce resources.
